A Kashmiri Wedding

Traveling

That’s what I love the most. When I received my friend’s wedding invitation from Jammu, I decided to experience the vibe of a Kashmiri wedding.

Whenever I travel, I usually book a one-way ticket because I don’t want to miss any experiences throughout my journey. Plus, I don’t have a boss to ask for leave.

As usual, I booked a one-way flight to Delhi. From Delhi, I boarded the Vande Bharat Express train to Jammu. It was a pleasant experience to travel by Vande Bharat. The wedding was a week-long event, followed by the Yagnopaveet ceremony for her brother.

The next morning, they started with the Devgon ceremony. This is a pre-wedding ritual in Kashmiri culture that marks the transition of the bride and groom from Brahmacharya Ashram to Grihastha Ashram. On one side, priests conducted the dharmic rituals, while on the other, relatives sang Kashmiri bhajans. The bride’s family held a veil over her head, showering her with holy water. She wore an essential piece of jewelry, the Dejaharu, strung on a sacred thread that passes through the middle ear cartilage.

Next, we moved to the marriage hall for the Mehendi Raat function. Mehendi Raat is the most important event preceding the actual wedding in a Kashmiri marriage ceremony. The function revolves around applying henna (mehndi) to the bride’s palms and feet. A delicious dinner follows, accompanied by night-long singing from professional Kashmiri folk singers. These singers are joined by a Bacha (a male dancer dressed as a female), who dances to the music. Guests are served Sheer Chai (salt tea) and Lipton tea throughout the night.

The main event starts with the reception of the Barat. The groom’s side is welcomed by the bride’s family to the sound of conch shells, and the fathers of both sides exchange nutmeg, a symbol of lifelong friendship. The wedding is carried out with all traditional Vedic rituals. The priest performs a mandap puja, after which the groom enters the mandap, while the bride is brought in by her maternal uncle. The couple is covered with fabric, seeing each other’s reflection in a mirror underneath. The father of the bride then performs the kanyadaan, after which the groom holds the bride’s hand for the remaining rituals, bound together by a special cloth.

At the end of the wedding, the couple sits with a red cloth over their heads as their loved ones shower them with flowers while the priest recites mantras. In this way, the couple is worshipped as incarnations of Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvati.

When it comes to lunch, Kashmiri cuisine is known for its flavorful dishes, including a variety of traditional items like Dum Aloo, Nadru Yakhni, and Haakh.

The next day, I went to Mata Vaishno Devi Mandir, which is 50 km away from Jammu. The trek spans approximately 13 kilometers, with a total ascent of about 5,200 feet. The trek generally takes 5-6 hours to complete (I took 4 hours), depending on the pace and endurance of the pilgrims. This cave temple is dedicated to the Hindu Mother Goddess, believed to be an incarnation of Goddess Durga. The goddess resides inside the cave in the form of three Pindis, or natural rock formations, referred to as Mahakali, Mahalakshmi, and Maha Saraswati.

The following day, we all went to a nearby ashram for the Yagnopavit ceremony of my friend Aman. Yajnopavit, also called Mekhala in Kashmiri, is a ritual in which three strings of a holy thread are placed on the left shoulder and under the right arm of a child. It involves the performance of a great yagna, where all the gods are invited by suitable mantras to bless the children during their initiation into the sacred Gayatri mantra. During the Mekhala ceremony, the boy begs for alms and blessings from his relatives.

Overall, experiencing Kashmiri culture is a blend of exquisite cuisine, rich traditions, warm hospitality, and stunning scenery, making it a journey I will cherish forever.

Thank you, Tickoo family for treating me like a family member. Your warmth and kindness made me feel truly at home, and I appreciate it more than words can express.

Kedarnath Calling

“After completing my visits to the six Jyotirlingas (Ujjain, Omkareshwar, Triambakeshwar, Somanath, Nageshwar, and Grishneshwar), thoughts of a seventh pilgrimage began to surface. Suddenly, images of Kedarnath Dham started to fill my mind. It was at that moment that I realized Baba Kedarnath was calling.”

As a solo traveler, I had visited the other six Jyotirlingas, and this time, I decided to team up with my friends. Three of my friends joined me to plan our dream journey to Kedarnath Dham.

Planning the trip together when traveling in a group is known to be the most challenging task. Despite this, we managed to gather most of the information and set our journey’s start date for September 22nd from Delhi. However, my journey began on the 20th as I had to travel all the way from the south.

From Delhi, we boarded a bus to Haridwar, which took nearly 5 hours. Afterward, we traveled to Sonprayag on another bus, an 8-hour journey.

At this point, I’d like to mention a book named ‘Rudraprayagada Bhayanaka Narabhakshaka.’ It narrates the story of hunting a ‘man-eating leopard’ that created panic in the Rudraprayag district in 1918. The author vividly described the beautiful landscapes of Rudraprayag in the book.

The journey through the serpentine roads of Rudrapryag was a feast for the eyes but fearful for the faint-hearted. That night, we rested in Sitapur and started our trek to Kedarnath temple the next day. It’s a challenging 22 km trek through a beautiful valley.

The journey was one of the toughest due to the narrow path. It wasn’t just the path; the movement of people going up and down, hundreds of horses carrying pilgrims and supplies to the shops of Kedar, made it even more challenging. One had to be very careful of the slippery surface and keep an eye on the moving horses. Meanwhile, one should not miss experiencing the river, waterfalls, and the snow-filled mountain view. After a long trek, we reached the top of the hill and decided to rest. There were hundreds of tents spread across the mountaintop, and one could choose to stay in a group or alone.

Kedarnath Temple

The next morning, we waited for over 3 hours in a queue to visit the temple and got the opportunity to perform Abhishekam and other offerings to the sacred Jyotirlinga. Kedarnath houses a Shivling known as the column of light. Early morning, one can experience a different atmosphere throughout the valley. When the first rays of sunshine touch the tip of the ice-capped mountain of Kedarnath, it feels like heaven.

Samadhi of Shankaracharya:

The samadhi of Adi Shankaracharya is situated at the back of Kedarnath Temple, and it is believed to be the final resting place of the great philosopher.

Bhairavanath Temple

Bhairavnath Temple or Bhairon Baba Mandir is situated south of the Kedarnath temple. Bhairava, also called ‘Kshetrapal,’ is the protector of Kedarnath temple and the entire Kedar valley in the winter when the temple is closed. Pilgrims who visit Kedarnath temple must visit Bhairavanath temple as per the ritual.

Bhim Shila

Bhim shila: In June 2013 a flash flood came down upon the overflowing banks of the Chorabari lake in Kedarnath valley. During the flood, a massive boulder that redirected the flow of water to the sides of the temple prevented the structure from being swept away by the water.

Sandhya aarti

After visiting all these places, in the evening, we gathered in front of the temple for ‘Sandhya aarti.’ Everyone assembled, their hearts filled with devotion, and their eyes fixed upon the glorious temple during the aarti. The sounds of drums, bells, and conchs can transport one to another dimension.

After finishing the aarti, we decided to trek down and started our descent towards Gouri Kund. Around midnight, we had crossed halfway down and decided to take some rest. At that moment, something caught my eye. A mother was carrying her 5-year-old son through that hard terrain. Her legs seemed tired, but not her eyes and heart. Suddenly, I looked at myself, and my legs were also still hurting. However, I decided to help her. Initially, she was a bit hesitant, but we convinced her. I took her son and started to walk down. At that moment, the boy slept peacefully on my chest and shoulder. As we walked down with that boy and his mother, a famous song started to play in my mind.

Patha nahi kis roop mein aakar narayan mil jayega

It felt like I was carrying Shiva himself through that Kedar valley in the midnight. This moment is the most memorable for me on this journey. As we approached our destination, the boy woke up. We made sure that both the mom and son were comfortable to walk, and we continued our journey. Within a few minutes, we reached Gouri Kund and took a vehicle to Sitapur. We stayed in Sitapur until the next morning and traveled by bus to Delhi.

In this journey, there were so many moments that words can’t fully describe, but one should experience them themselves. There are no words to explain the beauty of the Kedar valley. I hope once again I will be called by Baba Kedarnath towards his blissful abode.”

My name is Mary

After finishing the sunday prayer everyone turning back to their home. But one girl at the corner of church hall still in her bench sitting with eyes closed. I approached toward her and asked
“hey kid don’t wanna go home?”
She said “no”

At that time I looked at her face. Her eyes were dull and empty, yet they told a story of sadness as tears slowly fell down through her face.
“hey wat happened? Come on drink some water”
After drinking a glass of water she started to narrate her life.

” When I was born, my whole family happily welcomed me to this earth. My father lifted me and uttered my name in my ear, Mary.
Yes that’s my name Mary Joseph. My childhood life was normal. I was just like any other kid. But when my younger brother born, things started to turn. Parents occasional fighting started to become regular.
By this time I was admitted to school and my friends become my family. Actually we were the group of five girl. The whole school termed us ‘ Dare devils’. That days of my life were the golden days.

Years passed and I reached my 10th standard. But my scores were not up to the expectations of my family. So they sent me to tuition classes. I was too weak in science and my tutor started to help me to tackle the problems. Till that day it was normal. As usual he taught me very well. At the end he came towards me, patted my back and asked what do you think about me?
“Sir you are my teacher and a good friend”
” Not only friend. I’m more than that to you” he replied.

After that he took me to the corner of the room pushed be back to the wall and suddenly kissed my cheek. It was totally unexpected and I started to shiver. Instantly I pushed him aside and started to run. Ran ran and ran till my house and fell off to my bed unconsciously.

When I entered my 12th standard things started to getting worse. My father used to drink a lot and fight between my parents become common. Still I don’t know who is right and who is wrong.
Some how I completed my 12th and admitted to college for my under graduation.

One day when I was studying in my home as usual my parents started to fight. My grandmother tried to calm them, but their arguments heated up and my father tried to hit my mom. At that time my grandma went between them and unfortunately my father pushed her aside. When she fell down her head stroked  to the table and blood rushed to flow. Immediately we took her to the hospital. After the surgery she went to coma and doctors told us to take her back to home.

I tried to realise why these things happening to me. But nobody was there to answer and every time I ended up crying.

Ater struggling for 6 months my grandma passed away in her bed. At that time I was sitting with her hand in my palms. But her son still in the hangover of alcohol. My mom poured a bucket of water on him and told that your mom left this world.
He said ‘Ok’ without any emotions.

After the rituals my mom packed her things and went back to her father’s home. Me and my brother left alone with my drunken father and tears in me eyes.

That’s why I came here to ask Jesus why these things happened to me. I did not asked him any golden spoon. I just wanted to live a happy life with my family. When my friends getting call from their parents, my mobile forgets to vibrate whole day. When their parents came to vist them, my eyes starting to search for a warm hug from my mom”

“Its my life” and she leaned back to the bench.

“Yes it is” I replied to her and looked at the Jesus.

Spirituality: Way of life (part 4)

Part 4: Going beyond identity.

Whenever I visit a function like marrige or death rituals, random people comes to me and ask ‘ನೀನ್ಯಾರಂತ ಗೊತ್ತಾಗ್ಲಿಲ್ಲ (who are you?)

Its now my turn to search for answer. Actually who am I? That’s a question makes everyone confused. If somebody ask that question, normally we try to identify us with something. We generally relate to someone like, his son, his grandson, her daughter in law etc.

By the time when you identify like that, your intellect start to think and work according to your identification.
‘ I’m son of a richest man’ means you start to avoid poor people. Your mind start to think that you are good at all means and whoever don’t have enough money are dirty people. That’s because you identify yourself with money.

Same things happen when anyone who identity themselves with cast, religion, language, nationality ect.

Have you watched any TV debates?
In such programs whoever sitting in the panel are identified themselves with opposite ideologies. In their argument, they insist only  their ideology is the truth. Finally the debate ends without any clear conclusion.

I agree that in this social scenario for our survival we need to identify with different issues. But whoever want to lead a fruitful life or spiritual life should not identify with anything.
That’s what the saying ಅಹಂ ಬ್ರಹ್ಮಾಸ್ಮಿ (Aham Brahmasmi) reflect. It means your identification should be with the creator of this universe. This cosmic identity helps you to think beyond your social bonds.

Aatma shatakam or Nirvana shatakam written by Sri Shankaracharya clearly mention about this. In his writing he says

Iam not the intellect, ego, mind . Neither am I hearing, taste, smell, sight . Nor am I space, earth, light, air, field of consciousness. I am the pure consciousness of bliss – I am Shiva

Like this there are 6 stanzas which gives a better clarity that whatever it may be do not attach or identify with it. Have that supreme cosmic identity which is eternal blissful.

Spirituality- way of life (part 3)

Part 2

Part 3: In search of that which is not

When I was studying in high school, one thing that amazed me is about Astronomy (in my mother tongue ‘Khagola Shastra’).

Its all about the birth of universe, stars and life. Because different religious texts have different belief about the existence of universe. Science also deals in its own way.

But everyone agree that physical things which are present in this cosmos are too small. Most of the space is dark and nothing. That nothingness is the reason behind all the creation and reffered as Shi-va or  ‘that which is not’ ( by Sadghuru).

So that one thing gave me a different perspective in looking at life. Because as a human being we always tend to look for light. In our mind darkness means a negative thought will arise. We forgot to remember these light sources are not permenent. Darkness is only there throughout in our cosmos.

In spiritual practices that nothingness is referred as Shiva. Who is the creator and destroyer of everything. Because here everything comes from nothing and goes to nothing.

After realising this, my way of looking at temples has changed. Before that I used to visit temple for one reason. God please give me hapiness, health, a good life, these were my prayers. But after that whenever I visit to temple, I just sit there quietly and as Sri Sharnkaracharya said

Whoever trying to reach ultimate creator without any materialistic or physical desire.
He will be happy.
He will be always blissful.

Part 2 : One step towards another dimension.

Once Sadghuru told a story about a person who is roaming all over the places, for answer of his question. Some one told him there is a monk at the top of a hill. He may able to answer your questions.
So that man climbed the hill and reached to the top. There is a cave at the top and the monk sitting with his eyes closed.

He waited till the monk open his eyes. When monk opened his eyes, he immediately asked ‘Shall I ask a question?

The monk replied “Ok go ahead”
He asked the profound question of his life

” What is life? “

The monk looked straight at him, smiled and said
“Life is like smell of a jasmine upon  gentle spring breeze”

That man got surprised and replied
‘What? My teachers told me that life is like a taunt. If you sit it will hurt, if you stand it will hurt’

Monk replied with smiling face
“Ok, they told about their life, I told about mine”

Actually If I look back at my journey its like ECG waves. Some times its in peak and next day suddenly falls down. This variation made me to think about the definition of life and definition of success.

So just try to answer yourself for this question.

What is success in life?

For some people money, education, status are the symbol of success.
For some its health, service and happiness.

So there are thousands of opinion for success. Everyone has their own idea about success.

I’m also became prisoner of these ideas.
When I’m in school, teachers like ‘If you do this homework, if you solve this puzzle you are a successful boy’

After coming back to home family members starts to give examples of ‘Sharmaji ka beta’

These questions which made me to turn the page to another dimension. Where living a graceful life itself is a success.

Once when I was sitting in my class, one of my classmate look tensed. I asked him what happened?

He told  “I got low marks in my examination. My parents are not happy about that and nobody thinks about my situation”

‘Ok look here. Are you breathing right now?
Yes
Is your eyes, ear, mouth all are perfect?
Yes
Are you able to walk and able to do your works.
Yes

“Every part of your body working for you day and night. They are all perfect in their work and working for you. You are saying that nobody stands with you.

Try to look inward yourself than the outside world. That inner dimension of yourself teach you to lead your life.

First try to master your inner dimension, and that dimension opens up millions of possibilities in outer world.

Spirituality – Way of life (part :1)

Part 1: If you do anything in a right way it will work.

Disclaimer: This article is based on teachings of various guru’s (person, nature, experiences) and its impact in my life. Things which are discussed here may have different meaning in individual perspective.

I born in a traditional Indian family. It means knowingly or unknowingly most of the experiences of my life had spiritual essence in it. Its all starts with traditional rituals, which takes place when a child is in their mothers womb. But actually genetic memory and karmic memory will also affect ones lifestyle.

The rituals like naming ceremony, ‘Anna Prashana’ and blessings of elders which shape your growth as a child.
Name which become  part of your whole life is play a significant role. I brought up around the names of my family members like Shiva, Narayana, Lakshmi, Parvathi etc. I named after lord Krishna, also the name of my grandfather.

When I started to converse, elders of my family taught me some the verse of god and godess. I didn’t understand the meaning, but that sound started to give some different experience. Also that helped me to learn language quickly.

When I turned 12 years old, I got introduced to do some daily rituals through ‘Thread ceremony’. I followed what elders taught me to do. But they failed to teach me why this rituals needed. But whether you know the meaning or don’t know, if you do it in right way it will work.

IC: omshanthidhama.org

Same experience happened when I went to learn some of sanskrith verses from scholars of my community. I felt a different kind of vibration when I recite them in high pitch. Here also they didn’t gave any importance to teach the meaning of that words.

As I grow up formal schools education took over all the time. Rat race to be the topper of the class started. But reading other than texts books kept my mind in stable condition.

I got chance to read children version of Ramayana and Mahabharata, life stories of Srikrishna and other characters of our great Indian history.
After my engineering studies only I started to look into life. After that my life took a turn toward spiritual path.
